Obedience: The Path Jesus Calls Every Disciple to Walk

Obedience: The Path Jesus Calls Every Disciple to Walk

Obedience isn’t a word we love talking about.
It sounds rigid.
It sounds demanding.
It sounds like something that interrupts the life we want to live.

But in Scripture, obedience is never about control.
It’s always about alignment — aligning your life with the voice, the heart, and the leadership of King Jesus.

And over the years, I’ve learned something simple but profound:

There are things Jesus calls every disciple to obey…
and there are things the Spirit calls you specifically to obey.

Both matter.
Both shape your life.
Both build the Kingdom.
And both require courage.

Let’s walk through a couple places where the Scripture actually makes this clear - because obedience isn’t random, and it’s not guesswork. God gives us clarity — both universal and personal.

1. Some things require obedience because Jesus calls every follower to them.

These aren’t optional.
They aren’t “for the spiritually elite.”
They aren’t callings we get to vote on.

They are the baseline invitations of Jesus — consistent, universal, binding for all of His disciples in all places and all generations.

The Call to Love

John 13:34–35

“A new command I give you: Love one another… By this everyone will know that you are my disciples.”

Obedience begins with love — always.

The Call to Make Disciples

Matthew 28:19–20
Jesus wasn’t giving a suggestion. He was giving the Church its mission.

The Call to Holiness

1 Peter 1:15–16

“Be holy, because I am holy.”

Holiness isn’t perfection — it’s direction.
Obedience is walking in that direction.

The Call to Forgive

Colossians 3:13
Forgiveness is not optional for followers of Jesus.
We forgive because we are forgiven.

The Call to Take Up Your Cross

Luke 9:23

“If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself…”

Obedience will always require surrender — sometimes daily.

These are the things we don’t pray about whether we should obey.
We don’t ask God to confirm what He already commanded.
We don’t negotiate with clarity.

We simply follow. We say yes to following Him.

2. Some things require obedience because the Holy Spirit is calling you specifically to them.

This is the part of obedience that is deeply personal.
Not everyone is called to the same assignments.
Not every believer is sent to the same “One.”
Not every disciple’s path looks identical — and it’s not supposed to.

Scripture is filled with personal assignments:

Philip and the Ethiopian

Acts 8:26–29

“The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go to that chariot…’”

A specific man.
A specific moment.
A specific mission.

Ananias and Saul

Acts 9:10–15

“Go… this man is my chosen instrument.”

Ananias had no clue how big Saul’s story would be — he just obeyed.

Paul’s Redirection

Acts 16:6–10
The Spirit says “no” to Asia.
Then gives Paul a vision leading to Macedonia.

Sometimes obedience is a “go.”
Sometimes it’s a “don’t go.”

Peter and Cornelius

Acts 10:19–20

“Go with them… for I have sent them.”

Obedience here changed the trajectory of the entire Gentile world.

These weren’t generic commands.
They were personal assignments.

And the Spirit still gives personal assignments today — nudges, burdens, convictions, opportunities, promptings.

Obedience means responding. Obedience means saying Yes.

3. Your job is not to decipher my calling.

Your job is to obey what God is saying to you.

Comparison kills obedience.

Jesus settles this straight up when Peter tries to evaluate John’s path:

John 21:20–22
Peter: “What about him?”
Jesus: “What is that to you? You must follow Me.”

Translation:

You don’t need someone else’s assignment to match yours.
You need your obedience to match Jesus’.

Paul says the same thing:

Different gifts — same Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:4–7

And Paul reinforces the personal nature of calling:

You have “good works prepared in advance” specifically for YOU.

Ephesians 2:10

Meaning:

  • God will ask you to do things He won’t ask someone else to do.

  • God will burden you with things others may not understand.

  • God will point you toward people, places, opportunities, and steps that align with your story and gifts.

Obedience isn’t uniform.
Obedience is personal faithfulness.

4. So the real question is simple: Will we obey?

We don’t obey to earn God’s love — we obey because we already have it.

Obedience is faith in motion.

James 1:22

“Do not merely listen… Do what it says.”

Obedience is love expressed.

John 14:15

“If you love Me, keep My commands.”

Obedience is blessing unlocked.

Luke 11:28

“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Obedience is the difference between standing and falling.

Matthew 7:24–27

It’s not about perfection.
It’s about response.

Obedience is saying:

“Jesus, if You’re leading… I’m going.”

A Final Word

You don’t need to solve the whole path.
You don’t need to understand someone else’s assignment.
You don’t need perfect alignment with anyone else’s calling.

You just need to obey what God is asking of you.
And I just need to obey what He’s asking of me.

Some obedience is universal.
Some obedience is personal.
But all obedience leads to the same place:

More of Jesus and more of the life He designed you to live.

So the only question left is the simplest one:

Will we obey? Will we say Yes to what Jesus is calling us to, today?

Say Yes to Where Jesus Is Sending You

Say Yes to Where Jesus Is Sending You
